At the VideoDays Creator Festival in Cologne, Germany's largest creator expo, we implemented an interactive project under the motto #WirRettenDasInternet. The goal was to educate the younger generation – particularly Gen Z, social media users, and gaming fans – about fake news in a playful and interactive way.
The Concept:
At our physical booth, creators hosted spontaneous virtual game shows with their communities. Fans could participate directly via any device – smartphone, tablet, or PC – using only a browser, competing against each other in an immersive 3D world.
The creators acted as live hosts of the game show, using a buzzer system to submit their own answers. This interactive format allowed them to directly engage with their communities and dynamically moderate the gameplay.
In the 3D world, fans were represented by avatars and answered quiz questions by choosing one of two trapdoors, each representing a possible answer. If they selected the correct answer, they advanced to the next round. However, if their answer was incorrect, the trapdoor opened, and they dropped to a lower level, temporarily eliminating them from the game.
With each round, the number of active participants decreased until the final remaining players competed in an exciting obstacle course. This skill-based challenge determined the ultimate winner of the game.
The Goal:
The game show had a clear objective: to raise awareness among young people about fake news. Through its playful format and interactive environment, it made a complex topic tangible and accessible. The competitive mechanics and immersive 3D technology created excitement and motivation, resulting in a lasting educational impact.
The Highlight:
The winner was rewarded with an exclusive live video session with their favorite creator. In this personal Q&A session, fans could ask direct questions and enjoy a unique experience – an emotional highlight that strengthened the bond between creators and their communities.
Conclusion:
With the #WirRettenDasInternet campaign, we demonstrated how socially relevant topics like fake news can be creatively communicated to a young audience. The combination of an immersive 3D world, interactive gameplay mechanics, and direct creator-community interaction not only captivated participants but also proved how education and entertainment can be successfully intertwined. This project stands as a shining example of modern awareness-raising in the digital age.
